The Salone del Mobile.Milano extends beyond its exhibition spaces to involve the entire city of Milan, transforming it into an active cultural platform. The event opens with a prestigious evening at Teatro alla Scala, marking the sixth year of collaboration with its foundation. The concert features the Teatro alla Scala Orchestra conducted by Michele Mariotti, with pianist Giuseppe Albanese. The musical programme, ranging from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart onward, symbolizes a dialogue between music, design, and contemporary culture.

A central public feature is the Design Kiosk in Piazza della Scala, curated by Reading Room. This open-air cultural hub hosts daily talks combining architecture, publishing, and visual research. The programme begins with Bianca Felicori, who introduces the “Architectures of Freedom” project. Subsequent discussions explore independent publishing through contributors like “Cose” Journal and “NONSENSE”, highlighting evolving narrative formats. International perspectives follow, with Ark Journal examining space and storytelling, while Holiday Interiors imagines cross-era living environments. C Magazine uses the chair as a conceptual lens, and Never Too Small concludes with reflections on sustainable, compact living.

The “Architectures of Freedom” initiative invites visitors to explore Milan through five significant buildings, forming an urban narrative curated by Felicori. Starting at Piazza Sant’Eustorgio, the route includes landmarks such as the Sormani Library, Collegio di Milano, Casa a Tre Cilindri, Church of San Giovanni Bono, and a building in Corso Italia by Luigi Moretti. Each site features temporary textile installations by K-Way, creating a contrast between permanence and ephemerality while encouraging visitors to experience architecture as a narrative medium.

Complementing these experiences is the “Salone in the City” guide, available in print and digital formats. More than an event listing, it serves as a cultural map of Milan, highlighting 150 locations from museums and foundations to showrooms based on local insight. It connects the Salone to the broader cultural calendar, including Art Week Milan, and emphasizes the city’s evolving creative ecosystem. A key highlight is La Notte Bianca del Progetto on April 24, organized with Common Archive. This evening event celebrates design heritage, transforming collective memory into a shared, immersive experience. Overall, the Salone positions Milan not just as a backdrop, but as a dynamic participant in design discourse.
